Risks & adverse effects
Botox Cosmetic® treatments in particular are one of the safest non-surgical procedures performed. It provides a temporary effect. The single most important adverse effect is botulism which can occur as a result of improper dose injection causing difficulty with swallowing and breathing. The main complication of Botox Cosmetic® treatments are procedural, in that “unwanted results” may occur. These may include temporary facial nerve paralysis, facial and/or eyebrow droop or a surprised look of the eyebrows. As such a comprehensive knowledge of anatomy is essential and will lessen the risk of occurrence of these events. There may be redness, pain and swelling associated with the site of injection which is all short-lived and spontaneously resolves. There is a possibility of bruising, as is with every injection which will resolve within 7-10 days. To minimize this, we ask our patients to avoid the use of blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen family of medications, vitamin E, ginseng, unless as directed by your physician. Our doctors will provide further instructions to you in case of bruising to speed recovery time and resolution. At One Clinic MD, your safety and satisfaction with your results is our first and foremost priority.
How Does It Work?
Botulinum toxin will prevent muscular contractions and therefore reduce activity, by inhibiting the release of signaling molecules from the brain called Acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This in effect will create a temporary localized paralysis of the muscle group (or weakening in function). Recovery of the muscular function becomes apparent after approx 3 months from the initial time of the procedure, and recovery the original nerve terminal occurs. It is recommended that treatments be maintained on a regular basis, which will also aid in longer-lasting of the results and its therapeutic benefit. To learn more, please visit the Botox Website.
Contraindications
